Coach's Tip of the Week

From Coach Susan:

Susan, with her husband Leary, taking a break from the "wind"

Tip of the Week:

Windy Days Can Dehydrate

Spring is here, which means windy days ahead for riding and running. Prolonged exposure to wind and/or dry air (5-15% relative humidity) can actually leave your body more dehydrated. Your cells are continuously striving to have the right balance of water and electrolytes in order for optimal muscle performance and windy/dry conditions will zap your body's fluid levels quickly. So be sure to take in more liquids to account for the moisture you're going to lose - 8-12oz/hr is a good guide. Make a conscious effort to drink enough fluids, even when you're not thirsty. And remember: If you feel thirsty you may already be dehydrated.

She is a multiple winner of the Capital of Texas Triathlon and has posted 5 Ironman course swim records.  She races at all distances from sprint to Ironman, but especially loves toeing the line at the local Austin events.

She is also an avid trail runner and has been racing in regional trail events ranging from 25k to 50k.  She is the current 50k record holder at the Bandera Trail Runs and will be adding the 100k distance to her resume in the very near future.

Her career background includes a BS in Kinesiology and business minor from the University of Texas, marketing assistant for Speedo, 3 years onsite personal trainer, over 20 years swim coach experience, and over 10 years multisport coach experience.  Her coaching philosophy is to keep it simple, keep it fun and ALWAYS enjoy what you are doing.

In her spare time she enjoys playing on the Austin trails with her two dogs Venus and Mollie, home improvement projects, cooking, baking, eating all the things she cooks and bakes, and tooling around with her art background.

Assistant Coach - Geoffrey "Jeff" Whitfield

Jeff Whitfield completed his first triathlon in 2003 at age 25.  Before that, his sporting background was recreational running and cycling.  After a few finishes in the top of his age group, he was hooked!  Now he is one of the strongest male triathletes in the central Texas region, and is getting faster with each season.

After working as a software consultant at Computer Sciences Corporation, Jeff returned to the University of Texas for a master’s degree in Exercise Physiology, which he completed in May, 2007.  His academic areas included sports nutrition, human performance, and preventive medicine.  He is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine, and enjoys keeping in touch with the current research in the field.  When he is not coaching, training, or being a daddy, he is working as a Clinical Exercise Physiologist with Round Rock Medical Center’s Cardiac Rehabilitation program.

As a coach, Jeff has the ability to integrate nutritional recommendations with sound training principles to form a complete performance plan.  His background in exercise physiology allows him to explain the physiological purpose for every workout, with as much or as little detail as desired, while his experience in nutrition can aid athletes in anything from post race recovery to a change in body composition.

Jeff has raced all distances from sprint to half Ironman, including the inaugural 70.3 World Championships.  Look for him at the starting line of Ironman Louisville in 2008!

Assistant Coach - Jennifer Reinhart

Jennifer began her triathlon career way back in 1985, as a continuation of her lifelong career as a swimmer. She began competitive swimming at the age of 4 and swam competitively through her college years at Purdue University. From her teenage years through early 20's, Jen coached numerous youth swim teams. Jen holds a degree in Chemical Engineering from Purdue.

After a dozen years as an engineer and 3 children, Jen returned to the sport of triathlon as a competitor and a mentor to women new to the sport. From mentoring a few women for Danskin, she found that she really enjoyed the rewards of coaching. Jen has coached for several Women's programs in swimming and triathlon for the past 6 years. She is a USAT Level I Triathlon Coach and a USCA Level 3 Coach.

Jen has competed at all distances of triathlon from Sprint to Ironman. As a master’s athlete, she has consistently placed in the top of her age group, being named USAT All American or Honorable Mention All American for the past 6 years.  She has completed 7 Ironman triathlons with three trips to the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii.

She is lucky to be building a second career as a triathlon coach, while balancing her busy schedule of raising three kids (with her husband, Jim) and her own training. Jen and her family enjoy soccer, snow skiing, kayaking, and 60's/70's rock-n-roll.

Assistant Coach - Susan Farago

Susan got her first taste of multisport when she completed the Danskin Austin Women's Triathlon in 2000. Since then she has been extensively involved with triathlon from racing, coaching, or volunteering to having articles published on various multisport topics. Susan continues to work with a passion to develop her swimming, biking, and running skills. So far, her hard work has led to completing numerous sprint and Olympic triathlons, 8 half-Ironmans, and 5 Ironman distance races. She frequently places in the top of her age group and in 2005 she qualified for and competed at the Ironman Hawaii World Championship. Additionally she has recently become involved with trail running and ran her first 50K (that's 31 miles!) in Dec, 2007 and placed third in her age group and 15th overall female out of 235 women. Her athletic background is primarily in dance where she competed for 6 years as part of a dance team. Susan's "expanded horizons" approach to life has exposed her to volleyball, softball, soccer, yoga, boxing, wall climbing, SCUBA diving, and swimming/lifeguarding.

Susan has over 15 years of experience in adult learning and technical instruction, and she earned a Master's degree in Education from the University of Texas - specializing in the psychology of human learning and motivation. She also has 8 years of sports coaching experience with children and adults and is currently USA Triathlon Level 1 Coach certified and USA Cycling Level 3 Coach certified. Susan is also extremely interested in and knowledgeable about the "fourth sport of triathlon" - nutrition - and has undergone a transformation in her own diet as a result. She strives to focus on the physiological aspects of training and exercise, especially for females, and to educate athletes on the latest research and trends in multisport. She is an expert at making difficult tasks seem easier and her philosophy in life and in triathlon is to have fun, set goals, and work hard to achieve those goals.

When she is not training or coaching, Susan is a full time project manager with IBM. She also enjoys creative writing, gardening, photography, riding her motorcycle, adventures with her crazy friends, and spending time with her husband Leary - who thankfully is also a triathlete.
