Coach's Tip of the Week

From Coach Susan:

Tip of the Week:

To Shave or Not to Shave Your Legs

For men in multisport, this can be a difficult question but there is no right or wrong answer. If you're wondering if it's worth it, there are a few benefits of having silky smooth legs. For example, it's easier to: get into and out of a wetsuit, scrape rocks and debris out of road rash, apply sunscreen or body glide, and for your massage therapist to really dig into your leg muscles.

Hair removal can be done by using a razor (I personally recommend the Venus 3 - no nicks or cuts!) or with hair removal creme/foam. If you decide to take the plunge and then change your mind later, you can always grow it back!

She is also an avid trail runner and has been racing in regional trail events ranging from 25k to 50k.  She recently took the top honors at the Palo Duro Canyon 50 miler this past fall, and will be adding the 100k distance to her resume in the very near future.

Assistant Coach - Jeff Whitfield

Jeff Whitfield completed his first triathlon in 2003 at age 25.  Before that, his sporting background was recreational running and cycling.  After a few finishes in the top of his age group, he was hooked!  Now he is one of the strongest male triathletes in the central Texas region, and is getting faster with each season.

After three years as a software consultant, Jeff returned to the University of Texas for a master's degree in Exercise Physiology, which he completed in May, 2007.  His academic areas included sports nutrition, human performance, and preventive medicine.  He is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine, and enjoys keeping in touch with the current research in the field.  When he is not coaching, training, or playing dollhouse, he is working as a Clinical Exercise Physiologist with Round Rock Medical Center's Cardiac Rehabilitation program.

As a coach, Jeff has the ability to integrate nutritional recommendations with sound training principles to form a complete performance plan.  His background in exercise physiology allows him to explain the physiological purpose for every workout, with as much or as little detail as desired, while his experience in nutrition can aid athletes in anything from post race recovery to a change in body composition.

Jeff has raced all distances from sprint to Ironman, including the 2006 70.3 World Championships.  You'll find him lining up at road and trail runs of all distances, and Ironman Florida in 2009!

Assistant Coach - Susan Farago

Susan had her first taste of multisport after completing the Danskin Austin Women's Triathlon in 2000. She continues her extensive involvement with the multisport lifestyle which includes racing sprint to Ironman distance races, coaching a variety of ages and abilities, volunteering and photography at races, and publishing multisport-related articles. Susan is extremely interested in and knowledgeable about the "fourth sport of triathlon" - nutrition - and has transformed her own diet as a result. She is an expert at making difficult tasks seem easier and her philosophy is to enjoy the journey, laugh often along the way, and celebrate the destination.

Susan frequently places in the top of her age group and qualified for/competed at Ironman Hawaii World Championships. Her recent interest in trail running led her to compete at several ultra distance events such as Sunmart 50K (top 3 AG finisher), Captain Karl 6 hour night trail race (overall female winner), and Palo Duro 50 mile (top 5 overall female). Susan's 2009 race plans include the Austin Marathon, Ironman Lanzarote, and several ultra distance trail races in the Fall.

Susan has 15+ years of experience in training and education in corporate environments, and she earned a Master's degree in Education from the University of Texas - specializing in the psychology of human learning and motivation. She also has 10+ years of sports coaching experience with children and adults. Her current coaching credentials include: National Federation of Professional Trainers - Advanced Nutrition Specialist, USA Triathlon Level 1 Coach, and USA Cycling Level 2 Coach.

Susan enjoys creative writing, gardening, photography, riding her motorcycle, trying to make healthy meals and snacks that don't taste horrible, and spending time with her husband Leary - who thankfully is also a triathlete.

Assistant Coach - Kim Carlson

Kim Carlson completed her first triathlon at the Danskin women’s triathlon in 2001.  Her previous sporting background included track and field, racquetball, and basketball, but after finishing that first triathlon in 2001, she was hooked to this new found sport.

Kim will call herself a triathlete, but her first love was running.  She got her start running back in elementary school in track meets sponsored by the local YMCA. Those track meets lead to a passion for running and she has been running ever since. Kim was a cross country and track and field stand out in high school in Madison, WI and even found herself racing against the likes of future Olympians. She credits her knowledge of running to her coaches in high school and having access to the University of Wisconsin indoor and outdoor Track facilities throughout her high school and college years.

Although she has raced triathlon distances from sprint to ½ Ironman, she considers herself more of a 5k/10k runner, as proof with her female overall win at the Dallas Easter Seals 5k race.  However, she also has enjoyed working on her longer distances, as evidenced with a top ten finish in her age group at the Maui Half Marathon.

Kim has been coaching local Austin triathletes since 2004 and incorporates the philosophy of working hard, so you can play hard!  She has made it her specialty of recruiting people to “try a TRI” especially those who said they would never be caught in public wearing a swim cap – including her husband!

Kim attended the University of Wisconsin Madison where she earned her degree in Music-Vocal Performance. Music has always been a constant in her life and Kim continues to sing professionally in Austin - you may even spot her onstage at a local theater production.  Most days, however, you will find her at the Hill Country Running Company where she is the manager. Stop on by for one of her great shoe fittings!
